This is a simple 'ticker tape' applet that allows you to scroll one-line messages. Multiple messages may be concatenated together, and each message may have a URL associated with it for when that message is clicked. Messages are read either directly from parameters or from a textfile.
The applet may be downloaded for free by clicking on the TAR-file link below (read the FAQ if you're not sure what to do with a TAR file).
The FAQ also has step by step instructions on how to embed an applet into your own webpage.
While I do not require any payment for the use of these applets at The Applet Depot, if you find them to be extraordinarily useful on your own
website, I'd encourage you to make a modest donation (like, $1 or 2 per applet used) to my Paypal account (send any contributions to 'firstname.lastname@example.org').
Once unTARed, you should find the following classes (plus a '.jar' file if you want to use the archive= attribute in the <applet> tag):
Below are descriptions of all the parameters you may use to customize the applets to your webpages. Be sure to enclose any parameters that contain white space in double-quotation marks. Most parameters have default values in case you do not specify your own values, but the first two parameters (AUTHOR and COPYRIGHT) are necessary. If you are not sure how to incorporate an applet into a webpage (with its parameter names and values), looks at the source of this webpage and the applet embedded for an example, or read the FAQ page.
AUTHOR: This parameter must appear exactly as follows:
<param name=AUTHOR value="Eric Harshbarger, http://www.ericharshbarger.org">
COPYRIGHT: This parameter must appear exactly as follows:
<param name=COPYRIGHT value="Ticker applet, Copyright 1998, Eric Harshbarger">
BGCOLOR: This parameter indicates the background color of the applet. Consult the FAQ page if you are unsure what format to use for the parameter's value.
FGCOLOR: This parameter indicates the foreground color of the applet. Consult the FAQ page if you are unsure what format to use for the parameter's value.
FONTNAME: This value indicates the fontface used by the applet. Java1.0.2 has the following values from which to choose (must be spelled exactly): TimesRoman, Dialog, Courier, Helvetica, DialogInput, Symbol.
FONTSIZE: This value indicates the size of the font used by the applet.
FONTSTYLE: This value indicates the style of the font used by the applet. The value should be one of the following: plain, bold, italic, bolditalic.
SPEED: This is the number of milliseconds paused between each scrolling step. The default is 100.
STEPSIZE: This is the number of pixels the messages are moved each step. A positive value means the messages scroll right to left; negative is left to right.
TEXT.#: This series of parameters (TEXT.0, TEXT.1,...) defines messages a URLs associated with each message. The first TEXT.# parameter must be TEXT.0 and each one is incrementally increased by 1. Messages and URLs are separated by a '|' symbol or other character as defined by DELIMITER. The URL part is optional (if no URL is defined, nothing will happen when that message is clicked).
TEXTFILE: If defined, this parameter should point to a text file in which each line acts as another TEXT.# parameter. Messages/URLs obtained from this TEXTFILE are added to the ticker after any previously defined messages from TEXT.# parameters. There is a sample file used in the applet above.
TARGET: This is the targeted browser frame for any clicked URLs. The default is '_self'.
DELIMITER: If you want to change the character used to separate the messages and URLs in the TEXT parameters (because, say, you want to use and actual '|' in one of the messages), use this parameter.
